Chinos

Also called: khakis

Chinos are light cotton twill trousers with a straight or slightly tapered cut and slanted front pockets.

Fabrics
twill, cotton

How to recognise it

Clean lines with no big pockets or rivets, slanted side pockets and welt pockets at the back. Usually beige, navy or olive.

Where it comes from

The fabric was used for British and French military uniforms in the 19th century. The name comes from the Spanish chino: US soldiers in the Philippines in 1898 bought the cotton cloth from China.

Who and when it suits

They are the core trousers of smart casual: right for a relaxed office, weekends and travel. They pair with shirts, knits and loafers.

Variations and look-alikes

They come straight, tapered or relaxed with pleats, in beige, navy, olive or white, full length or cropped above the ankle. A lighter summer version uses a linen blend. They differ from suit trousers in the cotton fabric and relaxed feel, and from jeans in their clean lines.

How to style it

  • Roll the hem above the ankle in summer.
  • With a shirt and blazer they fit smart casual.
  • Beige goes with almost everything.
  • Navy chinos go well with a white shirt and brown leather shoes.
