How to recognise it
The heel is high and tapers to a tip of a few millimetres. A metal rod inside lets it carry weight. Stilettos tilt the foot steeply.
Where it comes from
The stiletto appeared in the 1950s, when shoemakers, notably Roger Vivier and Salvatore Ferragamo, started using metal rods. It became a symbol of femininity and elegance.
Who and when it suits
A heel for evenings, cocktails and formal events. It lengthens the leg and silhouette but is tiring to walk in for long and sinks in soft ground.
Variations and look-alikes
It appears on pumps, sandals, ankle boots and tall boots, 7–12 cm or higher. With a platform the same height feels lower. It differs from a kitten heel in its height.
How to style it
- For an outdoor wedding, choose a block heel instead.
- A silicone pad under the ball of the foot eases pressure.
- Replace heel tips in time.
- Start with 7 cm.

Frequently asked
01How high is a stiletto heel?
Usually 7–12 cm; a lower thin heel is a kitten heel.
02Why are stilettos uncomfortable?
All the weight falls on the ball of the foot and a tiny heel tip.
03How do you walk in stilettos?
Step heel to toe, take small steps and keep the shoulders straight.
04Are stilettos bad for your feet?
Long wear strains the ball of the foot and the knees, so alternate them with lower shoes.
