Pumps

Also called: court shoes

Pumps are closed shoes with no straps or laces, a low-cut upper and a heel, usually with a pointed or round toe.

How to recognise it

The upper covers the toes and heel but leaves the top of the foot open. There are no buckles, straps or laces, and the heel ranges from low to a high stiletto.

Where it comes from

In the 17th century both men and women wore heeled shoes. In the 1950s the thin, high stiletto heel, developed by Roger Vivier working with Dior, turned pumps into a symbol of elegance.

Who and when it suits

They suit the office, meetings, weddings and evenings. Nude pumps visually lengthen the leg; black ones go with almost everything.

Variations and look-alikes

They come with a pointed, round or almond toe, a low, mid or high heel, in leather, suede, patent, satin or velvet. An open-toe version is a peep toe. They differ from slingbacks in their closed back.

How to style it

  • Nude pumps lengthen the leg.
  • For the office, a heel up to 7 cm.
  • Break them in at home before an event.
  • Silicone inserts stop the foot slipping.
