How it feels

Silky, very smooth and cool.

Season: Summer and hot days – it keeps you cool.

What it's used for

Linings, blouses, dresses.

The lining of fine jackets and a silk-blouse stand-in – silk feel next to skin.

Pros

  • Silk feel without the silk price
  • Antistatic

Cons

  • Creases easily

Care: a typical label

Always follow your own garment's label – blends and finishes change the care.

How it's constructed

Satin weave. Long floating threads cover the surface – smooth and shiny, but quicker to snag.

A little history

Cupro has been made since the late 19th century in Germany; today mostly by Japan's Asahi under the Bemberg name.

How to recognise it

Regenerated fibres are smooth, slightly lustrous, very drapey and cool to the touch. Noticeably weaker when wet. They burn smelling of paper, like cotton.

Sustainability

Renewable and biodegradable, but viscose production is chemical-heavy. Lyocell (Tencel) is made in a closed loop – the cleanest choice. Look for FSC or Lenzing EcoVero.

When buying

'Bamboo' on a label usually means viscose. Modal and lyocell shrink less than plain viscose – worth paying more for clothes you wash often.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

01What is cupro?

Cotton linter – the short fibres left on cotton seeds. Cellulose is dissolved in a copper-ammonia solution – hence 'cuprammonium' rayon.

02Is cupro a natural fabric?

Partly: the raw material is natural (wood cellulose) but the fibre is made chemically – it's regenerated, neither natural nor synthetic.

03Does cupro shrink?

It can: cupro may shrink about 3–5% the first time it's washed hot. Cool water and no dryer prevent it.

04Is cupro breathable?

Yes: cupro lets air through and absorbs moisture – cool in the heat.
