How to recognise it
The leg seams curve outwards, the widest point is at the knee and the hem is narrower. The rise is usually high and the denim rigid so the shape holds.
Where it comes from
Curved jeans were seen in the 1990s, and around 2024 the barrel cut became one of the strongest jeans trends.
Who and when it suits
It is a fashion-forward, strongly shaped cut: best with a fitted or cropped top and loafers, ballet flats or pointed shoes.
Variations and look-alikes
They come full or ankle length, light or dark, with a stronger or softer curve. A milder version is called curved-leg jeans. They differ from mom jeans in bowing out at the knee, and from baggy jeans in a narrower hem. The more rigid the denim, the better the curve holds, so stretch versions look closer to mom jeans.
How to style it
- Keep the top fitted so the shape reads.
- With loafers or ballet flats.
- Choose rigid denim without elastane.
- A cropped jacket or a fitted knit looks good with barrel jeans.
