How to recognise it
The top is like tailored trousers: a belted waistband, a zip and slanted pockets. The legs are straight and end about 2–5 cm above the knee, sometimes with a turn-up.
Where it comes from
In the early 20th century, shortened trousers were made in Bermuda for the British army and local businessmen to suit the hot climate. In Bermuda men still wear them with a blazer, tie and knee socks as business dress.
Who and when it suits
The most elegant shorts: they suit town, summer work, holidays and dinner on a terrace. For women Bermudas go with a blazer, a blouse and loafers or heeled sandals.
Variations and look-alikes
Bermudas come tailored with a pressed crease, with pleats at the waist, with turn-ups, in linen, cotton, wool for suits, denim, and with wide hems. They differ from shorter tailored shorts in their above-knee length, and from capris in ending above the knee.
How to style it
- With a blazer in the same colour for a suit.
- Press the crease.
- With loafers or heeled sandals.
- The length should end above the knee, not on it.
