How to recognise it
From the front you see a short straight or A-line skirt, often with a diagonal overlap, with shorts under or behind it. From the back the shorts' legs sometimes show.
Where it comes from
Skirts with built-in shorts were made for women for cycling and sport as early as the early 20th century. In sport, especially tennis and golf, they spread in the second half of the 20th century and are now everyday wear too.
Who and when it suits
A comfortable choice when you want a skirt but need to move: for travel, active days, sport and days with children.
Variations and look-alikes
Skorts come in sporty tennis and golf styles, in denim, pleated, A-line, straight with a wrap overlap, and with the skirt at the front only or all round. A skort differs from culottes in its shortness and separate skirt panel, and from a real skirt in the shorts inside.
How to style it
- With sneakers and a T-shirt.
- Choose stretch for tennis.
- With a blouse and sandals in town.
- Good for a windy day.
