How to recognise it

Stretch jersey that hugs the leg, a wide high waistband and seams at the sides or front, with no fly or front pockets. The length runs from mid-thigh to just above the knee.

Where it comes from

Stretch cycling shorts appeared in the 1970s with Lycra. In the 1990s Princess Diana wore them with oversized sweatshirts, and in 2018–2019 they came back to street style.

Who and when it suits

For sport, yoga, cycling and weekends. In fashion they pair with an oversized blazer, shirt or sweatshirt.

Variations and look-alikes

Bike shorts come short to mid-thigh, longer to above the knee, padded for cycling, seamless, ribbed, matte or shiny, and with side phone pockets. They differ from running shorts in their close fit, and from leggings in length.

How to style it

  • With an oversized blazer or sweatshirt.
  • For cycling, choose a padded pair.
  • A wide waistband does not dig in.
  • Wash cool without softener.
