How to recognise it
A hard, round crown like a bowl, a narrow brim curled at the edges and a band. Usually black or brown felt.
Where it comes from
In 1849 the London hatters Lock & Co. commissioned a hat for Edward Coke, made by Thomas and William Bowler, from whose surname the name comes. Charlie Chaplin later made the bowler famous.
Who and when it suits
A retro, elegant hat, today worn mostly as a fashion statement or for themed events.
Variations and look-alikes
A bowler comes in black, brown or grey hard felt, with a taller or lower crown and a narrow band, and women's models are smaller and trimmed. In Bolivia women wear the bowler as part of traditional dress. It differs from a top hat in its low round crown, and from a fedora in its undented crown and narrow brim.
How to style it
- With a coat and blazer for a retro look.
- Wear it straight.
- Store it in a hat box.
- Clean it with a soft brush.
