How to recognise it
A tall structured front, six panels, a flat straight peak and a closed back. The size sticker is often left on the peak.
Where it comes from
In 1954 New Era launched the 59FIFTY, which baseball league teams began wearing. In the 1990s the fitted cap became a badge of hip-hop and street style.
Who and when it suits
It looks neater than a soft cap and suits streetwear, sportswear and travel.
Variations and look-alikes
A fitted cap comes with a dead-flat or slightly curved peak, a stiff or softer front, in wool, cotton or synthetics, with or without a team logo. A stretch version (flexfit) gives a little. It differs from a snapback in its closed back and from a baseball cap in its flat peak and sizing.
How to style it
- Measure your head above the brows and ears.
- You can bend the peak slightly.
- With a hoodie and wide trousers for street style.
- Store it on a shelf, not squashed.
