How to recognise it
The rounded crown is sewn from six panels with a button on top, a stiff curved peak at the front and a buckle or hook-and-loop strap at the back. Often with an embroidered logo.
Where it comes from
In 1860 the Brooklyn Excelsiors baseball team was the first to wear peaked caps. In the second half of the 20th century they became everyday wear and one of the most popular hats in the world.
Who and when it suits
It shades the eyes from the sun and suits sport, weekends and travel. With a T-shirt, hoodie or blazer it gives a relaxed look.
Variations and look-alikes
A baseball cap comes soft with no stiff front (the dad hat), structured with a tall front, in cotton, denim, corduroy, wool for winter and light perforated polyester for sport. It differs from a fitted cap in its curved peak and back strap, and from a trucker in its solid fabric back with no mesh.
How to style it
- Wear the peak at the front; backwards looks sportier.
- With a coat or blazer it creates contrast.
- Hand wash so the peak does not bend.
- Adjust the strap so it does not pinch.
