Tailored shorts are mid-length shorts cut like suit trousers, with pleats, a pressed crease and slanted pockets.

How to recognise it

A belted waistband with a fastening, one or two front pleats, slanted pockets and a pressed crease down each leg. The length is mid-thigh or a little lower.

Where it comes from

Suit shorts took off in the 2010s, when fashion houses began showing summer suits with shorts in place of trousers. Chino shorts come from cotton chino trousers.

The neatest summer shorts for town, smart casual parties and a relaxed office. With a blazer they make a summer suit.

Variations and look-alikes

Tailored shorts come with one or two pleats or flat-fronted, as cotton chinos, wool suit shorts, linen, with a belt or side tabs, shorter or longer. They differ from Bermudas in their mid-thigh length, and from paperbag shorts in a smooth waist with no gathering.

How to style it

  • With a blazer in the same fabric.
  • Tuck in a shirt or blouse.
