Notch lapel

Also called: notched collar

A notch lapel is a jacket or coat collar with a V-shaped notch where the collar meets the lapel.

How to recognise it

You see two parts: the collar on top and the lapel below, with a small triangular notch between them. The lapels end at the top button.

Where it comes from

It has been the most common lapel since the mid-19th century, when the modern suit took shape. Peak lapels are considered more formal, and shawl lapels belong to the tuxedo.

Who and when it suits

Versatile and businesslike, it appears on blazers, suits and coats. It suits the office, meetings and evenings.

Variations and look-alikes

It comes narrow and modern, medium and classic or wide and retro, with or without a buttonhole. Peak lapels point upwards and shawl lapels have no notch. The notch lapel is the most versatile shape.

How to style it

  • Lapel width should match shoulder width.
  • A brooch goes on the left lapel.
  • Narrow lapels look more modern.
  • Press lapels without flattening the roll line.
