Strapless dress

Also called: bandeau dress

A strapless dress has neither sleeves nor straps: the top stays up on the bust thanks to a structured bodice with boning or an elastic edge.

How to recognise it

The top edge runs across the bust: straight, wavy or in a sweetheart shape. Shoulders and arms are fully bare. The bodice is often reinforced with boning or a silicone strip at the edge.

Where it comes from

Hollywood designers began making strapless evening gowns in the 1930s, and in the 1950s, once boned bodices became reliable, Dior and Balmain made them popular.

Who and when it suits

It suits cocktails, parties, weddings and summer events. Bare shoulders show off the neck and jewellery, and a stole or short jacket works on a cooler evening.

Variations and look-alikes

It comes with a straight, wavy or sweetheart top edge, knee, midi or floor length, with a boned or soft bodice. A short summer cotton version held up by an elastic band is called a bandeau. It differs from an off-the-shoulder dress in being held up at the bust, not on the arms.

How to style it

  • Try it on with the strapless bra you will wear.
  • The bodice should stay put without constant adjusting.
  • Bare shoulders call for bolder earrings or a necklace.
