How to wash jeans
Jeans don't need washing after every wear: indigo dye rinses out easily and cotton shrinks in heat. Rarely, inside out, cold – and the colour lasts for years.
Always follow your garment's own label – it beats any general advice.
Washing
- Do up the zip and button and turn them inside out – the inside rubs, not the face.
- 30 °C, a non-bleach colour detergent for dark denim. The first few times on their own – the dye runs.
- Stretch jeans (with elastane) – gentle cycle: heat and a hard spin break down the elastane.
Drying
- Hang by the waistband and straighten the seams. The dryer can shrink them a size.
Common mistakes
- Washing too often – faster fading and wear.
- Freezing 'instead of washing' doesn't kill bacteria; air them and spot-clean instead.
