How to wash silk
Most silk can be washed at home – by hand, in cool water, with a pH-neutral detergent. The exceptions: lined pieces, bonded details and a 'do not wash' label.

Always follow your garment's own label – it beats any general advice.
Hand washing
- First test colourfastness: dab a hidden seam with a damp white cloth.
- Cool water, a silk or pH-neutral detergent, 3–5 minutes, gentle squeezes.
- Add a spoonful of white vinegar to the last rinse: it restores the sheen and neutralises the detergent.
Drying and ironing
- Press out in a towel and dry in the shade – sun yellows silk.
- Iron inside out while slightly damp, 1–2 dots, no spray on the face of the fabric (water marks).
Common mistakes
- Enzyme detergents and bleach – they break down the silk protein.
- Perfume and deodorant on silk – they stain; let them dry before dressing.
