How to wash sneakers
Canvas and knit sneakers can go in the machine; leather and suede are cleaned by hand. Always take out the laces and insoles, and dry them without heat – the glue hates it.
Always follow your garment's own label – it beats any general advice.
Canvas and knit
- Remove laces and insoles; brush the dirt off the soles while dry.
- Put them in a mesh bag with a couple of towels (to stop the banging), 30 °C gentle cycle, spin up to 600.
- Stuff with paper and dry at room temperature, away from radiators.
Leather
- Wipe the upper with a damp cloth and a drop of soap; scrub soles with a brush and baking soda. Once dry – leather cream.
Suede
- Dry only: a suede brush and eraser. Water leaves marks.
Common mistakes
- The dryer – soles come unglued and the fabric shrinks.
- Chlorine bleach – it yellows white soles.
