Crew neck

Also called: round neck

A crew neck is a small round neckline that sits around the base of the neck, the most common neckline on T-shirts and sweaters.

How to recognise it

The neckline is round and shallow, sitting at the base of the neck, often with a ribbed or jersey binding. It does not show the collarbones or lengthen the neck.

Where it comes from

The name comes from the sweaters of rowing crews in the early 20th century. It later became the standard neckline for T-shirts, sweatshirts and sweaters.

Who and when it suits

It suits almost everyone and every occasion: every day, under a blazer, with jewellery on top. On broad shoulders it accents the shoulder line; on narrow ones it adds width.

Variations and look-alikes

It comes narrow and close, wider or with a ribbed binding, on T-shirts, sweaters and dresses. A wider, deeper round neck is called a scoop neck. It differs from a boat neck in being narrow.

How to style it

  • A long necklace lengthens the line.
  • It looks neat under a blazer.
  • A shirt collar over a crew neck creates layers.
  • Short neck: choose a wider round neck.
