Plunging neckline

Also called: deep V

A plunging neckline is a very deep V that reaches the middle of the chest or below, often on evening dresses.

How to recognise it

The point sits far lower than a normal V, sometimes down to the waist. The edges are often held with tape or mesh so the neckline stays in place.

Where it comes from

In the 1970s Halston made deep necklines popular in evening wear, and in 2000 Jennifer Lopez's green Versace dress at the Grammys became one of the most famous red carpet dresses.

Who and when it suits

It is an evening neckline for awards, parties and celebrations. By day a plunge can be worn with a camisole or T-shirt underneath.

Variations and look-alikes

It comes with mesh, a strap across the point, wrapped or free, at the front or the back. A deep V at the back is an open back. It differs from a V-neck in its depth.

How to style it

  • Fashion tape holds the edges.
  • Choose a plunge bra or none.
  • Little jewellery is needed.
  • By day add a camisole underneath.
