Halter neck

Also called: halterneck

In a halter neck the garment is held up by a strap or band around the neck, leaving the shoulders and often the back bare.

How to recognise it

The straps rise from the bust and meet behind the neck, where they tie or fasten. The shoulders are bare and the back is often open.

Where it comes from

In the 1930s Madeleine Vionnet designed backless evening gowns with this neckline, and in 1955 Marilyn Monroe's white halter dress in The Seven Year Itch became legendary.

Who and when it suits

It suits summer, the beach and evenings. It shows off the shoulders and arms, so it looks good with a tan and hair up.

Variations and look-alikes

It comes with a tie, a band, a chain or a collar around the neck, open or closed back, deep or high. A high halter covers the chest up to the neck. It differs from a one-shoulder in being symmetric.

How to style it

  • A strapless or convertible bra.
  • Hair up shows off the back.
  • The strap should not dig into the neck.
  • Broad shoulders: a halter narrows them.
