How to recognise it
A hood with drawstrings, a large front pocket, ribbed cuffs and hem. Usually loopback jersey or fleece, loosely cut.
Where it comes from
In the 1930s the US company Champion began making hooded sweatshirts for workers in cold New York warehouses. In the 1970s hip-hop and skaters adopted them.
Who and when it suits
The most comfortable piece for leisure, sport and travel. Under a coat, blazer or leather jacket it works in town too.
Variations and look-alikes
It comes as a pullover or with a full zip, loose, oversized or cropped, plain or printed. Without a hood it is simply a sweatshirt. It differs from a hooded knit in its jersey fabric and kangaroo pocket.
How to style it
- Under a coat or blazer in town.
- With joggers as a set.
- Choose a dense loopback jersey.
- Wash inside out in cool water.
