Corset top

Also called: bustier, corset

A corset top is a fitted top with sewn-in boning that shapes the bodice, often strapless and laced.

How to recognise it

You see vertical seams with boning, a straight or sweetheart top edge, and lacing or hooks at the front or back. Waist length or just below.

Where it comes from

From the 16th century corsets were underwear. In the 1980s Vivienne Westwood made the corset outerwear, and in 1990 Jean Paul Gaultier created Madonna's famous corset.

Who and when it suits

A statement evening piece with trousers, jeans or a skirt. With a shirt underneath or a blazer on top it looks modern and even works by day.

Variations and look-alikes

It comes strapless or strappy, with a sweetheart or straight top edge, in satin, cotton, denim, velvet or lace, laced or zipped. A longer corset covers the top of the hips and shapes the waist more. It differs from a camisole in its boning and fitted cut.

How to style it

  • With wide trousers or jeans for contrast.
  • Over a white shirt for a daytime version.
  • It must let you breathe and sit comfortably.
  • With a blazer for a party.
