Boater hat

Also called: straw boater, skimmer

A boater is a stiff straw hat with a flat top, a straight flat brim and a ribbon band.

Fabrics
linen, cotton

How to recognise it

A low, flat cylindrical crown, a stiff horizontal brim and a wide grosgrain ribbon around it. Woven from stiff straw.

Where it comes from

In the 19th century rowers and spectators at boat races wore these hats, hence the name. Venetian gondoliers wore them too.

Who and when it suits

An elegant summer hat for outdoor weddings, horse races, garden parties and a retro look.

Variations and look-alikes

A boater comes in natural or bleached straw, with a black, navy, striped or coloured ribbon, with a classic or narrower brim, and in women's versions with flowers and bows. It differs from a Panama in its stiffness and completely flat top, and from a bowler in its straw and straight brim.

How to style it

  • With a linen blazer or summer dress.
  • Wear it straight.
  • Keep it dry.
  • Store it in a box.
