Little black dress

Also called: LBD

The little black dress is a simple black dress, short or knee length, that can be worn for many occasions just by changing the accessories.

Fabrics
crepe, wool, jersey, silk

How to recognise it

Black, a simple cut with little decoration, at or just above the knee. Usually a sheath, shift or A-line.

Where it comes from

In 1926 Vogue published Coco Chanel's simple black dress and called it "Chanel's Ford", comparing it to the car everyone could have. In 1961 the Givenchy dress in Breakfast at Tiffany's made it a legend.

Who and when it suits

It works almost everywhere: with a blazer and loafers by day, heels and jewellery at night, for cocktails and the theatre. It belongs in every basic wardrobe.

Variations and look-alikes

It can be a sheath, shift, A-line, slip or wrap, with or without sleeves, in crepe, wool, jersey or silk. The daytime version is plain and matt, the evening one lace or satin. What matters is not the silhouette but the simplicity that lets accessories change it.

How to style it

  • Day: a blazer, loafers and a large tote.
  • Evening: heels, pearls or bold earrings.
  • Choose a quality fabric that will not fade.
