How to recognise it
A dented crown like a fedora's, a band around it and a flexible brim slightly turned down at the front. Woven straw lets air through.
Where it comes from
Although called Panama hats, they are woven in Ecuador. The name stuck because they were shipped via Panama, and in 1906 US President Theodore Roosevelt made them famous while visiting the Panama Canal works.
Who and when it suits
An elegant summer hat for travel, outdoor weddings, terraces and the beach. It goes with linen suits and summer dresses.
Variations and look-alikes
A Panama comes in the fedora shape with a dented crown, the optimo shape with a ridge, a round crown, a narrow or wider brim, natural or bleached, with a black, brown or striped band. The finest Montecristi hats take months to weave. It differs from a bucket hat in its straw and dented crown.
How to style it
- Do not fold the straw or it will crack.
- Hold it by the brim, not the crown.
- With a linen suit or dress.
