Crop top

Also called: cropped top

A crop top ends above the waist and shows part of the midriff; it can be jersey, woven or knitted, with or without sleeves.

Dress codes
Casual

How to recognise it

The key is length: the hem ends above or at the waist. Necklines and sleeves vary: square, round, strappy, short or long sleeves.

Where it comes from

Short tops were worn in the 1940s with high-waisted skirts, and in the 1980s and 1990s fitness and pop stars made them popular. They returned in the 2010s.

Who and when it suits

They look best with high-waisted trousers, skirts and jeans, so only a narrow strip of skin shows. They suit summer and festivals.

Variations and look-alikes

It comes in jersey, knit or poplin, with a square, round or one-shoulder neckline, short, long or no sleeves. A very short top that barely covers the bust is called a bra top. It differs from a regular T-shirt in ending above the waist.

How to style it

  • Pair with high-waisted bottoms.
  • For work, under a blazer with a high waist.
  • Long sleeves make it work in autumn.
  • Choose a denser knit.
