Tulle skirt

Also called: tutu skirt

A tulle skirt is made of several layers of sheer net (tulle), so it is light, airy and full.

How to recognise it

You see several sheer layers, often over an opaque lining. The skirt is puffy and the hem uneven or wavy. Lengths run from a short tutu to midi.

Where it comes from

Tulle skirts come from the ballet tutu. Carrie Bradshaw's pink tulle skirt in the opening credits of Sex and the City (1998) made them famous with a wider audience.

Who and when it suits

Romantic and festive, it suits celebrations, photo shoots and weddings. A plain T-shirt, a jumper and trainers make it everyday.

Variations and look-alikes

It comes as a short ballet tutu, knee or midi, in soft or stiff tulle, plain, glittered or in several colours. Soft tulle falls lightly, stiff tulle holds its volume. It differs from a circle skirt in its sheer layers. A dark tulle skirt with a chunky jumper and ankle boots works even in winter, while pale pastels suit summer and celebrations.

How to style it

  • Pair tulle with a simple fitted top.
  • Store it hanging so the layers do not crush.
  • A steamer brings back the volume.
