How to recognise it
At the waist the skirt is smooth with no pleats and falls in soft waves below. A full circle is called a "sun" skirt, half a circle a half-circle skirt. It is usually knee or midi length.
Where it comes from
In the 1950s felt poodle skirts, cut as a circle and decorated with an appliqué, were hugely popular in the United States. They became a symbol of rock and roll dancing.
Who and when it suits
Cheerful and feminine, it suits dancing, celebrations and summer. With a fitted top and a thin belt it creates an hourglass line.
Variations and look-alikes
It comes as a full, half or quarter circle, a short jersey skater, knee or midi, with a tulle petticoat for a retro look. A thicker fabric holds the shape; a light one falls in soft waves. It differs from a pleated skirt in its smooth waist with no pleats.
How to style it
- Keep the top fitted so the skirt does not swamp you.
- On a windy day choose a heavier fabric.
- With ballet flats or sandals in summer.
