How it works
A new model often cannot pay for a trip to a market abroad, so the agency advances flights, visa, apartment, pocket money, cards and tests. All of it goes on the model's account and is covered from future fees.
An advance is neither a gift nor an unconditional loan: it is part of your own future earnings. If jobs are few, costs can exceed earnings, and the balance turns negative.
New York State law requires the model's written approval for every cost an agency pays up front and deducts later, before the charge is made. It is good practice anywhere.
In practice
Before a trip to Seoul the agency sends a list: flight €650, visa €80, apartment €140 a week, pocket money €100 a week, cards €60. The model signs it as consent to the costs. After the trip every one of these lines appears on the statement and is deducted from his earnings.
What to watch for
- Before travelling, ask for a list of costs with prices.
- Ask whether interest is charged on advances.
- Check every advance on your statement.

Frequently asked
01Do you repay an advance if you do not work?
It depends on the contract. Usually a negative balance stays on your account with that agency; ask in advance and get the answer in writing.
02Can an agency advance a test shoot?
Yes, but a test must not be a condition of signing, and its price should be clear.
