How it works
The rate depends on the type of work, the market and the model's experience. Magazine shoots pay little or a token fee, catalogues and e-commerce pay steadily, and advertising campaigns pay most, because a usage fee is added to the day rate.
The day rate is a figure before commission and expenses. The agency keeps its percentage, tax is withheld in some countries, and the rest goes to the model's account.
What the rate covers matters. Fittings, travel days and overtime are often paid separately, and the use of pictures in advertising should always carry its own price.
In practice
A model is offered two jobs in the same week: a magazine shoot for a token fee and an e-commerce day at the usual day rate. The agency advises taking both: the magazine gives a publication for the portfolio, the online store the income. Both amounts before commission appear in the confirmations.
What to watch for
- Always find out the rate before the job, not after.
- Ask whether it includes usage, and for how long.
- Compare the rate with what appears on your statement.
