How a job happens

Option

Also called: first option, second option

An option is a client's provisional reservation: they ask the agency to hold the model's time for a certain day until they make a final decision.

How it works

An option is not yet a job. The client may confirm it, and it becomes a booking, or release it at no charge. A model can hold several options for one day: the first option has priority, the second waits in line.

If the second-option client wants to confirm, the agency goes to the first and asks them to decide within an agreed time: confirm or release the day. That way no client ties up a model without reason.

For the model, options matter for planning: you cannot travel or make private plans for that day while an option stands. How many options turn into jobs varies, but a lot of options already shows clients are interested.

In practice

On Monday a shoe brand puts a first option on a model for Thursday. On Tuesday a magazine wants her the same day and puts a second option. The booker asks the shoe client to decide by Wednesday noon. It releases the option, so the magazine is confirmed for Thursday. The shoe client pays nothing, because the option was not yet a job.

What to watch for

  • Do not treat an optioned day as free until it is released.
  • Tell the agency about holidays and exams well in advance.
  • Do not celebrate early: only a confirmed job is paid.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

01What is the difference between an option and a booking?

A client can release an option at no cost. A booking is a confirmed job, and cancelling it has consequences.

02What are first and second options?

A queue. The first client has priority; the second gets the day only if the first releases it.
