Chelsea boots

Also called: elastic-sided boots

Chelsea boots are ankle boots with elastic side panels and a pull tab at the back, slipped on without laces.

How to recognise it

An ankle-high shaft, triangular elastic panels on both sides, a pull tab at the back, a low heel and a round or slightly pointed toe.

Where it comes from

The elastic sides were devised in 1851 by J. Sparkes-Hall, Queen Victoria's bootmaker. In the 1960s young people in London's Chelsea and the Beatles made them popular.

Who and when it suits

Versatile autumn and spring boots: with jeans, trousers, dresses and even a suit. They are easy to pull on and off.

Variations and look-alikes

They come on a thin or chunky lugged sole, in smooth leather or suede, with a low or higher heel, a round or sharper toe. Chunky Chelseas look more modern. They differ from other ankle boots in their elastic sides.

How to style it

  • With straight or slim jeans.
  • Trousers should cover the shaft or end above it.
  • Protect suede with a water spray.
  • Chunky-soled Chelseas suit a dress.
