How to recognise it
High lacing up the whole shaft, a thick rubber lugged sole, a round toe and sturdy leather. The heel is low but the sole is thick.
Where it comes from
The boots come from military footwear. After the Second World War German doctor Klaus Märtens designed an air-cushioned sole, and in 1960 the Dr. Martens 1460 appeared in England, adopted by punks and other subcultures.
Who and when it suits
Comfortable and striking, they go with jeans, dresses, skirts and a suit for contrast. In autumn and winter they keep out damp and slipping.
Variations and look-alikes
They come with eight or more eyelets, with a side zip, on a thin or very thick sole, in smooth or matt leather. A platform version adds even more height. They differ from Chelseas in their lacing.
How to style it
- With a floral dress for contrast.
- With wide trousers the hem covers the shaft.
- Break new boots in gradually.
- Clean and wax the leather.
