How to recognise it
Bodice and trousers join at the waist, fastening with a zip, buttons or a wrap front. The trousers are often wide, the top sleeveless, V-necked or strappy.
Where it comes from
In 1919 the Italian artist Thayaht designed a one-piece garment called the TuTa. Pilots and parachutists wore jumpsuits, and in 1968 Yves Saint Laurent and later the disco era made them evening wear.
Who and when it suits
One piece makes a whole outfit, so a jumpsuit is handy for travel and evenings. An elegant crepe one suits cocktails and weddings.
Variations and look-alikes
It comes with wide or slim legs, sleeveless, strappy or long-sleeved, wrap or shirt style, in crepe, linen, denim or silk. A short version with shorts is called a playsuit. It differs from dungarees in having a full top.
How to style it
- A belt marks the waist.
- Heels lengthen the trouser line.
- Check it is comfortable to sit and bend.
- For an elegant evening, choose crepe or silk.

Frequently asked
01Can you wear a jumpsuit to a wedding?
Yes, an elegant one in crepe or silk, not white, with heels.
02How is a jumpsuit different from dungarees?
A jumpsuit has a full top; dungarees have only a bib on straps.
03How do you choose a jumpsuit size?
The key is the torso length from shoulder to crotch: if it is too short, the jumpsuit will pull.
