Loafers

Also called: penny loafers

Loafers are closed, laceless slip-on shoes with a low heel, often with a strap or metal trim across the instep.

How to recognise it

They slip on with no laces, have a stitched apron on the upper, a low heel and often a leather strap with a slot or a metal horsebit. Moccasins are softer, with no hard heel.

Where it comes from

Modern loafers were inspired by Norwegian shoes. In 1936 the US firm G. H. Bass launched Weejuns, into whose strap students slipped a coin (penny loafer), and in 1953 Gucci added a horsebit trim.

Who and when it suits

Versatile: they suit the office, weekends and travel. They pair with jeans, chinos, skirts and even dresses.

Variations and look-alikes

They come with a penny strap, a horsebit, tassels, a chunky or thin sole, in leather, patent or suede. Chunky loafers are modern, classic ones suit the office. They differ from oxfords in having no laces.

How to style it

  • Show the ankle with cropped trousers.
  • With white socks for a retro look.
  • Chunky-soled loafers look more modern.
  • Clean and condition the leather.
