Mary Janes

Also called: bar shoes, strap shoes

Mary Janes are closed-toe shoes with a strap across the instep, fastened with a button or buckle.

How to recognise it

A round or square toe, a low-cut upper and one or more straps across the foot. The heel ranges from flat to a high block.

Where it comes from

The name comes from Mary Jane, a character in the 1902 Buster Brown comic, after which a shoe company was named. At first these were children's shoes, later women's.

Who and when it suits

Girlish and retro, they go with skirts, dresses, trousers and socks. The strap holds the foot firmly, so they are comfortable.

Variations and look-alikes

They come flat, on a block or high heel, with one or two straps, a round or square toe, in patent, leather or velvet. Chunky-soled Mary Janes pair with socks. They differ from ballet flats in the instep strap.

How to style it

  • With white socks or tights.
  • A chunky block heel is comfortable all day.
  • With a midi dress for a retro look.
  • The strap should not dig into the foot.
