How to recognise it
Midi is a length, not a silhouette: an A-line, wrap, shirt or slip dress can all be midi. The hem ends at mid-calf, sometimes a little higher or lower.
Where it comes from
Dior's 1947 New Look skirts ended at mid-calf, and the word "midi" appeared in the late 1960s as the middle between "mini" and "maxi".
Who and when it suits
It is the most versatile dress length: right for the office, weddings as a guest, celebrations and every day. With heels it looks elegant, with trainers relaxed.
Variations and look-alikes
Almost every silhouette comes in midi: A-line, wrap, shirt, slip, pleated, sweater. Light summer midis often have ruffles or front buttons, winter ones are knit or wool. The key is the length: if the hem ends nearer the ankle, it is tea length.
How to style it
- If you are petite: shoes that show the top of the foot, or a slim heel.
- With ankle boots, the hem should cover the top of the boot.
- For work: a midi with a blazer and loafers.
