How to recognise it
Thick navy wool, two rows of big buttons, a large collar you can turn up against the wind, and slanted hand-warmer pockets. Hip length.
Where it comes from
The name is traced to the Dutch pijjekker (pij meaning a coarse woollen cloth). In the 18th century sailors of the European and American navies wore these coats.
Who and when it suits
A warm, practical autumn and winter coat that goes with jeans, trousers or a dress. The short length is handy for driving and cycling.
Variations and look-alikes
It comes in classic navy, black, grey or camel, with anchor or plain buttons, fitted or relaxed. A slightly longer version is called a reefer or naval coat. It differs from a duffle in having buttons instead of toggles and a collar instead of a hood.
How to style it
- With a roll-neck jumper and jeans.
- Turn up the collar on a windy day.
- Choose wool or a blend with more than half wool.
- Chelsea boots or loafers suit it.
