Wrap coat

Also called: camel coat, belted coat

A wrap coat has no buttons: the front overlaps and is held with a self-fabric belt, often with a shawl collar.

How to recognise it

A wide shawl collar, an overlapping front, a belt at the waist and a below-the-knee length. Usually in thick wool or cashmere, often in camel.

Where it comes from

The most famous example is the Max Mara 101801 coat, designed by Anne-Marie Beretta in 1981. It became one of the most copied coats in the world.

Who and when it suits

Elegant and feminine, it suits the office, the theatre and the city. The belt marks the waist, so the coat looks good over a dress or a suit.

Variations and look-alikes

It comes in wool, cashmere, alpaca or bouclé, in camel, black, grey or white, with shawl or notched lapels, from knee to ankle length. A robe coat is looser and softer. It differs from a trench in having no buttons and a warm fabric.

How to style it

  • Knot the belt at the side rather than buckling it.
  • Choose a length below the knee.
  • With pointed shoes or ankle boots.
  • Camel goes with black and with white.
