How to recognise it
Horizontal or box quilting shows, with puffed fabric between the seams. Usually zipped, with a high collar or hood, from waist to ankle length.
Where it comes from
In 1936 the American Eddie Bauer created the quilted Skyliner down jacket, and in 1937 designer Charles James showed a fashion version. In the 1990s the puffer became a streetwear symbol.
Who and when it suits
The warmest and lightest winter jacket: right for the city, travel and the mountains. A short one looks sporty, a knee-length one is comfortable on freezing days.
Variations and look-alikes
It comes short and sporty, to the thigh, long to the knee or ankle, matt or shiny, with a hood or high collar, with horizontal or box quilting. An oversized version looks more fashion-led, a fitted one more classic. It differs from a parka in the quilting and lighter fabric.
How to style it
- Wash down cool and tumble dry with tennis balls.
- A long version covers the thighs on the coldest days.
- Balance it with slim trousers or leggings.
- Store it uncompressed, not in a vacuum bag.
