Model board

Also called: division

A board, or division, is a group of an agency's models by type and experience: new faces, main board, men, commercial, curve and others.

How it works

On an agency's website models are shown not in one list but by board. Each board has its own bookers and clients: the new faces board works with tests and first jobs, the main board with experienced models, the commercial board with advertising and catalogue clients.

The name comes from the days when models' cards hung on a board in the agency's office. A website has replaced the board, but the word stayed: a model is "on the main board" or "moved up from new faces".

The board shows how the agency sees a model and which jobs it will offer. Moving to the main board means the model now has experience and clients.

In practice

For his first year a model appears on the agency website under New faces. When he comes back from his second trip with a campaign and a few publications, the agency moves him to the main board. A different booker now pitches him, whose clients are bigger brands, and his card goes out for different castings.

What to watch for

  • Look at the models on the board you are being offered.
  • Ask who your booker will be.
  • If the board does not suit you, raise it before you sign.
