Plus-size model

Also called: curve model

A plus-size or curve model works with larger-size clothing: in campaigns, catalogues, online stores and on the runway.

How it works

Most women wear larger sizes than runway samples, so brands increasingly want models who look like their customers. That is why many agencies have a separate curve board.

For a plus-size model height, proportions, skin and the ability to move matter too; only the measurements differ. As with other models, the measurements must be stable, since clients book by them.

The Supermodels open call invites plus-size models specifically. It shows the field is no longer an exception but a normal part of the market.

In practice

A plus-size clothing brand is looking for models for a campaign and its online store. The agency proposes three models from its curve board. The client's key requirements are proportions, height around 175 cm and stable measurements, since the same model will shoot the whole season. The chosen model also gets a fitting before the first shoot, so the samples can be adjusted to her.

What to watch for

  • Show both figure and movement in your portfolio.
  • Update your measurements regularly.
  • Ask the agency whether it has a curve board and clients.
