Freelance model

Also called: independent model

A freelance model works without an agency: finds clients, negotiates fees, signs agreements and invoices by themselves.

How it works

Freelancing is mostly chosen by commercial, fitness or social-content models in smaller markets, where clients contact the model directly. The advantage is plain: no commission, and every decision is the model's own.

The drawbacks are less visible. Nobody vets the client, negotiates usage rights, chases an unpaid invoice or stands up for you if something goes wrong on set. Major fashion clients and markets abroad are almost out of reach without an agency.

A freelance model needs three habits: a written agreement for every job, clear limits on how the pictures may be used, and someone who knows where and with whom they are working.

In practice

A fitness trainer who also models gets a message from a local sportswear shop. Before agreeing he asks in writing for the day fee, the hours, where the pictures will be used and for how long. The shop wants them for billboards too, so he adds a usage fee. Both sides confirm the terms by email.

What to watch for

  • Before a job, get the fee, the hours and the usage in writing.
  • Check the client: the company, past work, references.
  • Hold a first meeting in a public place or do not go alone.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked

01Can you model without an agency?

Yes, especially in commercial and local work. For high fashion and international jobs an agency is practically essential.

02Does a freelance model earn more?

Per job, yes, as there is no commission. But there are usually fewer jobs, and the negotiating and the risk are all theirs.
