How a job happens

Overtime

Also called: OT

Overtime is working time beyond the agreed length of the day, paid extra at a rate agreed in advance.

How it works

A working day is normally defined in hours: a full day usually means eight, a half day four. Anything longer is overtime, and its rate belongs in the booking confirmation.

New York State law sets a clear line: for work longer than eight hours in a 24-hour period the client must pay at least 50% above the contracted hourly rate. Elsewhere it is a matter of contract, so the figure has to be agreed before the job.

In practice overtime often gets lost if nobody records it. Note your arrival and wrap times and tell your booker the same day.

In practice

A shoot is planned for eight hours, 8 am to 4 pm, but late clothes mean it wraps at 6.30 pm. The model notes the time, the client signs the voucher and the model messages the booker that evening. The agency adds two and a half hours of overtime at the agreed rate.

What to watch for

  • Know before the job how many hours were agreed.
  • Note the wrap time and send it to your booker that evening.
  • Negotiate extra hours through the agency, not on set.

Frequently asked

01When does overtime start?

At the end of the agreed day. Working time is counted from call time.

02Can I refuse to stay longer?

If you have another job or a flight, say so in advance. Any extension is decided by the agency together with you.
