Composite card

A composite card, also called a comp card or zed card, is a model's calling card: a few of the best pictures from the portfolio in reduced size, together with the name, height, measurements and agency contacts. It works like a business card, only much larger. One side carries a portrait and the name, the other shows several pictures from different shoots and the measurements.

The card matters because it is what stays behind when the model leaves the room. A model hands it to the client after a casting and sends it to agencies, so the pictures and the numbers on it have to be accurate and current. Both a printed version and a PDF are needed, and a model without an agency can still make one with their own contacts on it.

What goes on a composite card

The front is simple: one strong portrait, the name or first name only, and the agency logo. The back carries three or four different pictures, chosen so that the client sees the model at full length, in profile or three-quarter view, in movement and in a contrasting look. Next to them go the measurements and the contacts: the agency's name, phone, e-mail and website, or the model's own details if there is no agency yet.

An extra skill or talent can be added. The pictures normally come from the portfolio, which today lives mostly in digital form: on the agency's site, in a PDF and on the comp card itself.

When you need it and how to keep it current

The card is used after a casting, when the model leaves it with the client, and when the model's material is sent to agencies. It is only part of the preparation: at a casting the type, proportions, movement and manner are judged, and the card simply helps the client remember who they saw.

Update the card whenever your measurements or hair change or you have stronger pictures. Working models refresh theirs at least once a season. The cost is normally the model's, paid directly or advanced by the agency and deducted from earnings. For under-18s the card should be made by an agency or the parents.
