Mother agency
A mother agency is a model's first agency, usually in their home country. It discovers and prepares the model, places them with agencies abroad and remains their main representative throughout the career. Almost every modeling career starts this way, because learning to pose and walk, building professional pictures and dealing with clients is hard to do alone.
The choice matters because the mother agency stays responsible for the model's safety and pay when they work in another country. A model normally has one mother agency and different partner agencies in different markets. A legitimate one works only under a written contract, never charges to apply or to be represented, and involves a parent or legal guardian whenever the model is under 18.

How a mother agency works in practice
The agency earns a commission on the jobs a model does. Costs it advances, such as travel, housing and tests, are deducted from earnings and shown on the model's statement. Abroad, the model is represented by partner agencies, while the mother agency stays in the background as the main representative.
The Supermodels guide shows the usual route in. A candidate sends three plain photos, of the face, in profile and at full length, with accurate measurements. The agency reviews applications, invites suitable candidates to meet, and only then begins preparing them for work with agencies in other countries.
What to check and what to avoid
The warning signs are consistent: you are asked to pay upfront, there is no written contract, all contact happens over social media, you are promised quick money abroad, or a minor is invited to come without a parent. One of them is enough to stop and run the seven checks.
In the contract, look at the term, the termination clause and the agency's duties. One to three years with an option to renew is usual, while 5–10 years with no way out is a red flag. Whether you may work with several agencies in the same market depends on the exclusivity clause.
