Slip skirt

Also called: satin skirt, bias skirt

A slip skirt is a light, bias-cut midi skirt in a shiny fabric with an elastic waistband, like the lower half of a slip.

How to recognise it

The smooth, shiny fabric falls along the hips and widens slightly at the hem. The waist usually has elastic and no zip. It is usually midi length.

Where it comes from

Slip garments come from the bias cut of the 1920s and 1930s, became a sign of minimalism in the 1990s, and around 2019 the satin slip skirt returned as an everyday piece.

Who and when it suits

Versatile: by day with a chunky jumper and trainers, at night with a blouse and heels. In autumn it pairs with tall boots and a coat.

Variations and look-alikes

It comes in satin, silk, cupro or viscose, midi or long, with an elastic waist or a zip, plain or printed. A matt version looks more businesslike, a shiny one more evening. It differs from a pleated skirt in its smooth, unpleated fabric, and from an A-line in its bias cut.

How to style it

  • A chunky jumper makes a nice contrast with the sheen.
  • Choose seamless underwear.
  • Hand wash or use a gentle cycle.
