How it works
On set the photographer is the model's main partner. They say where to stand, how to turn, where to look, and quickly judge which pose works. Assistants who set up the lights and handle the equipment work with them.
Every photographer works differently: some give exact posing instructions, others wait for the model to move and shoot continuously. A good model quickly senses the rhythm needed.
For test shoots choose a photographer by their work and references. When working with a photographer you do not know for the first time, tell your agency or family where you will be.
In practice
On a test shoot the photographer starts with exact instructions: weight on the back leg, shoulder to camera, chin down. Later he puts on music and simply shoots while the model changes poses on his own. After an hour they go through the frames on screen together and pick the best.
What to watch for
- Follow instructions and offer variations.
- Change your pose slightly every few frames.
- Check an unfamiliar photographer before a test.
