How it works
Tests are a new model's main source of portfolio pictures. The agency chooses a photographer, a few different looks are created with a stylist and a make-up artist, and the model gets the best frames from each.
A test may be paid or unpaid. A paid test is commissioned by the model or the agency from an experienced photographer. An unpaid one, called TFP, happens when both the photographer and the model need the pictures. The agency may advance the cost of a test and deduct it later.
A good test looks like a magazine page, not a holiday snap: clear light, simple styling, the face and the figure visible. Ten strong frames are worth more than a hundred average ones.
In practice
The agency arranges a test for a new model with a photographer it trusts. Three looks are agreed: a natural daylight portrait, a styled fashion frame in the studio and a full-length street shot. A week later she receives twelve retouched pictures, of which the agency chooses eight for her portfolio. The cost of the test goes on her account.
What to watch for
- Before the test, agree how many pictures you will get and when.
- Ask who pays for it and whether it goes on your account.
- Choose a photographer by their work, not by the price.

It varies by market. In Lithuania a photographer charges roughly €50–100 an hour, plus studio and make-up; a test usually takes an hour to an hour and a half.
02Do you need a test shoot to get signed?
No. Simple pictures are enough to apply. Tests come after you sign.
