In short
- Brow lamination is a chemical treatment: a solution softens the hairs, they are brushed into place and set.
- The appointment takes 45–60 minutes and the result lasts 6–8 weeks.
- For the first 24 hours keep brows away from water, sweat, steam and make-up; avoid retinol and exfoliants for 72 hours.
- Not suitable for sensitive skin, eczema, rosacea or a history of contact dermatitis.
- Do not repeat it more often than every six weeks, or the hairs dry out and break.
In a few years brow lamination has become one of the most requested brow treatments: it gives several weeks of tidy, brushed-up brows without gel or daily make-up. It is also a chemical treatment right next to the eyes, so it pays to know how it works, who it does not suit and how to look after your brows afterwards.
This guide is part of our eyebrow series. For the history of brow fashion and the trends of 2026, see the main guide: Eyebrow trends: from 1920s pencil lines to 2026.
What is brow lamination
Brow lamination, sometimes called a brow lift or a brow perm, is non-invasive: the skin is not broken and no pigment goes into it. A lifting cream breaks down the bonds inside each hair and relaxes its surface, so the hair can be moved in any direction. A setting solution then rebuilds the bonds in the new position.
The result: hairs lie flat and even, usually upward and slightly outward, and the brow looks wider, fuller and groomed. There are no more hairs than before; they simply cover more area.
Brow lamination before and after

Who it suits
- Unruly brows whose hairs grow downward or in different directions and will not stay brushed.
- Uneven brows: redirected hairs cover the gaps.
- Thinning brows, when you want more volume without a pencil.
- Anyone who uses brow gel every day and wants the time back.
Lamination does least for very short or very sparse brows: if there is nothing to brush, the shape will not change. In that case eyebrow tinting or make-up does more.
How the treatment works, step by step

- Patch test. A responsible technician tests the cream on a small area of skin beforehand.
- Prep. The brows are cleaned and the shape is mapped; stray hairs may be removed.
- Lifting cream. Applied to the hairs to break their bonds.
- Brushing and wrap. The hairs are brushed in one direction and covered with plastic wrap for several minutes.
- Setting. The cream is removed, a setting solution goes on, and the brows are wrapped again for several minutes.
- Cleaning. Every trace of product is removed.
- Nourishing. An oil or serum puts moisture back into the hairs.
The whole appointment takes about 45–60 minutes and does not hurt. It is often combined with shaping and a tint.
How long does brow lamination last
The result typically lasts 6–8 weeks. It does not vanish overnight: hairs are replaced naturally, new ones grow in their usual direction, and the shape gradually returns to what it was. How long yours lasts depends on hair thickness, growth rate and aftercare.
Brow lamination aftercare
| When | Avoid | Do |
|---|---|---|
| First 24 hours | Water, steam, sweat, make-up and creams on the brows | Sleep on your back; do not touch or rub the brows |
| First 72 hours | Retinol, acids and other exfoliants near the brows | Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, working around the brows |
| Every evening | Rubbing oily make-up remover across the brows | Apply a nourishing oil or cream; brush with a spoolie in the morning |
| After 6–8 weeks | Repeating sooner than six weeks | Check the condition of the hairs before you rebook |
Risks and who should skip it
- Healthy skin around the brows.
- A patch test with no reaction.
- Hairs long enough to brush into place.
- At least six weeks since the last treatment.
- Sensitive skin, eczema, rosacea, contact dermatitis.
- Allergies to chemical products.
- Irritated, broken or freshly exfoliated skin.
- Dry, brittle hairs after a previous lamination.
Possible side effects are redness, itching, swelling, dry or peeling skin and small bumps. Hairs laminated too often become dry, weak and prone to breaking. The most serious risk is to the eyes: if the solution runs into an eye, damage can range from dryness to loss of vision. That is why your eyes stay closed and the products go on the hairs only.
Brow lamination at home: is a kit worth it
A brow lamination kit contains the same kind of chemicals a salon uses, but a mistake costs more. The usual errors: leaving the cream on too long, using too much so it runs toward the eye, and repeating the treatment too often. If you do it yourself:
- patch-test and wait two days;
- keep to the maker's timing and do not extend it for a "stronger" result;
- work on one brow at a time with that eye closed, and keep damp cotton pads within reach;
- have it done in a salon the first time, so you know what it should look like.
If you only want to try the look, brow gel or soap brows give a similar effect and wash off at night.
Brow lamination and tint
Lamination is often offered with a tint, because brushed-up, darkened hairs look their fullest. For sensitive skin that is a double load, so the first time it is wiser to separate the two by a few days and see how your skin reacts. For choosing a tint and using it safely, see our guide to eyebrow tinting.
Lamination, gel or permanent make-up
| Method | Lasts | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Brow gel or soap brows | Until evening | Trying the look with no risk |
| Brow lamination | 6–8 weeks | Unruly, downward-growing hairs |
| Eyebrow tinting | 3–6 weeks | Fair or faded brows |
| Permanent make-up | A year or more | Sparse brows or gaps that hairs cannot cover |
Lamination changes the direction of the hairs but adds neither colour nor hairs. Empty patches that hairs cannot cover are filled only by make-up or by microblading and powder brows. And the shape that lamination will emphasise is worth getting right first: see eyebrow shapes.
Choosing a technician
- Ask whether a patch test is done and which products are used.
- Ask to see results a few weeks on, not only straight after the treatment.
- A good technician will also tell you when lamination will do nothing for your brows.
- Expect to pay roughly $50 to $120 per session in the US; compare the same bundle of services when you compare prices.
For models: before a casting or a shoot
Laminated brows photograph well, but they are a strong style choice that lasts for weeks. Agencies ask for natural brows at an open call or a casting, so time a lamination to have softened by the day that matters, or use gel instead. If you are signed, check with your agent first.
Frequently asked questions
What is brow lamination?
A chemical treatment in which brow hairs are softened, brushed in the direction you want and set. Brows look wider, fuller and tidy without gel.
How long does brow lamination last?
Typically 6–8 weeks. The result fades gradually as the hairs are naturally replaced.
Does brow lamination damage your eyebrows?
Done properly and no more often than every six weeks, usually not. Too frequent treatments, or a solution left on too long, dry the hairs out so they weaken and break.
What can you not do after brow lamination?
For the first 24 hours do not get the brows wet, sweat heavily, use a sauna or apply make-up. Avoid retinol and exfoliants for 72 hours.
Can you do brow lamination at home?
You can, but the risk is higher: the solution is applied right next to the eyes and damages hairs if left on too long. Have it done in a salon the first time.
Who should not get brow lamination?
People with sensitive skin, eczema, rosacea, contact dermatitis or allergies to chemical products, and anyone whose skin around the brows is irritated.
Can you combine brow lamination and tint?
Yes, it is a common pairing. With sensitive skin, separate the two by a few days the first time.
